Regional netball clubs recovering from floods and cyclones are receiving financial support thanks to a performance-based funding program linked to Australia’s elite netball competition.
Funds raised are being directed to clubs rebuilding after natural disasters, including those affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred in Downey Park and Tamborine Mountain in Queensland, as well as flood-hit communities in New South Wales such as Macleay, Manning Valley, and Nambucca.
Lisa Harrison, chief executive consumer insurance at Suncorp, said the initiative recognises the role of netball clubs as essential gathering spaces in regional areas.
“When extreme weather happens, damaging courts and facilities, the impact ripples far beyond the players, the whole community is impacted. Raising funds through the Suncorp Super Shot not only allows Suncorp to give back to these communities, but it’s a way we can support local clubs doing important work for our young people,” Harrison said.
Since its launch in 2020, the program has delivered more than $250,000 in funding for disaster recovery in local netball communities across the country.
Former Australian Diamond and Confident Girls Foundation Community Engagement Lead Laura Scherian said the donations are helping affected clubs return to play sooner.
“All funds raised directly help girls get access to a sport that empowers and fosters their growth by helping clubs rebuild after disaster. You only have to spend a Saturday morning at a netball association and you’ll see the incredible impact our sport has on young lives,” Scherian said.
The Confident Girls Foundation supports young women from disadvantaged backgrounds through access to netball, providing not only equipment but also counselling, education and job assistance.
The latest round of funding was announced during the 2025 Junior State Age Championships at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex on the Sunshine Coast, attended by Australian Diamonds Head Coach and Suncorp Team Girls Ambassador Stacey Marinkovich, as well as Queensland Firebirds player Lara Dunkley and Sunshine Coast Lightning’s Ava Black.
